Cherubim
Luke 8:10 Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: I. “And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat. And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof. And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be.” Ex 25:18-20 a. The cherubim and the mercy seat were all made together as one piece of worked gold b. Knowing Who the mercy seat is (Jesus), we must identify who are the cherubim - NOWHERE in the Bible do we see cherubim being identified as angels! c. ANGELS are not one with Jesus! d. Hebrews 9:5 calls them the “cherubim of GLORY!” e. The Hebrew for "chariot" is rekhubh, a sort of inverted kerubh (cherub). f. Cherub in Hebrew – was a word that was of foreign origin (perhaps Egyptian), and is not given to anything else in the Bible other than these creatures – the best derivation of its meaning is “a vehicle” – used only as a means to transport God and His GLORY (Cherubim of Glory) i. Ps 18:10 And He rode upon a cherub, and flew; He flew upon the wings of the wind. g. There are several references in scripture of God dwelling in the midst of the cherubim i. Ps 80:1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth! ii. Ps 99:1 The LORD reigns; Let the peoples tremble! He dwells between the cherubim; Let the earth be moved! iii. Isa 37:16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. iv. Ezek 9:3 Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the temple. v. Ex 25:22 And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, h. The cherubim were “ vehicles of the glory” – relating to God’s Glory, and in this case, appear to be symbolic of the Father and Holy Spirit themselves i. The lid of the Ark of the Covenant was made from ONE piece of gold fashioned into 3 figures i. 2 cherubs ii. and a blood-stained mercy seat iii. This symbolizes the oneness of the triune God 1. ONE CHERUB Mercy Seat ONE CHERUB 2. The FATHER The SON The HOLY SPIRIT j. The Father and Holy Spirit gaze with satisfaction upon the Blood-stained Mercy Seat – the finished work of redemption i. Ex 12:13 “When I see the Blood, I will pass over you” k. As God sees the sprinkled blood of the Mercy Seat, He withholds the judgment of death l. Cherubim are seen many times in relation to judgment of sin – guardians of the Holiness of God i. Gen 3:21-24 (first instance of Cherubim in the Bible) they are seen as guarding the tree of life with the flaming sword at the Gate of Eden ii. Exo 26:31-33 "You shall make a veil woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen. It shall be woven with an artistic design of cherubim . . . Then you shall bring the ark of the Testimony in there, behind the veil. The veil shall be a divider for you between the holy place and the Most Holy. 1. Here the cherubim are seen guarding any presumptuous intrusion without Blood, into the Holy of Holies, God’s thrown room iii. Psalm 80:1 – the Shepherd of Israel dwells between the Cherubim iv. Psalm 99:1 – The Lord reigns and sits between the Cherubim m. Thus we see that these 2 cherubim, represent the Father and Holy Spirit, with the mercy seat at their feet (speaking of the position of Jesus in His humanity) – He was the covering for the ARK of COVENANT – and all of the church, all BELIEVERS, enter that ARK of COVENANT with God, becoming ONE with JESUS II. Cherubim in general a. Represent the GLORY of God – appears that their ministry is exclusively to carry the Glory, to protect the Glory, and to cover the Glory i. Protected the Garden of Eden (called the Garden of God in Ezek 28:13) Perhaps this was a manifestation where the Godhead themselves (Son and Holy Spirit) fulfilled this role of protecting the Garden (as various times Jesus Himself came to earth to perform the works of the Father as the “angel of the Lord” (Gen 16:10-13; Ex 3:2-6; 23:20; Judg 6:11-18) 1. NOTE: We have no description of their appearance here! ii. Lucifer was the “anointed cherub that covered” 1. He rebelled, and God determined to give this function of worship and of covering the Glory to His new creation, man b. Ezek 10:4 Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub, and paused over the threshold of the temple; and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the LORD's glory. c. Observations of their description: i. the faces of the man, the lion, the ox, and the eagle, of which a cherubic form had one, two or four (Ex 25:20; Ezek 41:18; 1:16). (NOTE: in ezek 10:14 where the first face was that of a cherub instead of an ox) ii. They had wings, in number two, four or six (Ex 25:20; 1 Kings 6:27; Ezek 1:6, Rev 4:8). iii. They sometimes appear too with their bodies, hands, wings, and even accompanying wheels full of eyes (Ezek 1:18; 10:12). iv. The variety in the figuration of the cherubim is due to the variety of aspects in which they stand, and of offices or services they have to perform. They appear to be able to change and adapt to the duty at hand. This figuration is evidently symbolic. The figuration is merely intended to shadow forth or symbolize its nature and office in sensible forms to those who have not entered the spiritual world. d. 4 LIVING CREATURES – Not MONSTERS with 4 heads – the description can be broken down to show symbolic features of the character of these creatures i. Ezekiel 1:1 “HEAVENS were opened and I saw – Visions of God” ii. Rev 4:1 a door standing open in heaven. – almost the same vision iii. KEY – Rev 4:1 I will show you things which must take place after this." – speaks of the end times iv. Ezek 1:4 - Whirlwind out of the NORTH – north always speaks of the place of Judgment 1. Jer 1:14 – out of the NORTH calamity shall break forth on Israel 2. Jer 6:1 – evil appeareth out of the North 3. Jer 10:22 great commotion out of the North – to make Judah desolate 4. Jer 46:20 – but destruction cometh – it cometh out of the north 5. Jer 47:2 – but waters rise out of the north – a flood that overflows the land 6. Jer 50:3 – out of the North a great nation comes against her to make her desolate 7. Ezek 38:14-16 prophesy to Gog, out of the north you will come up against Israel v. IN THE LAST DAYS – a whirlwind of judgment is coming upon the earth! 1. PEOPLE will die – wars and rumors of wars (Matt 24:6) 2. Blood up to the horses bridle (rev 14:20) 3. Judgment already began at the house of God (1 Pet 4:17) vi. Ezek 1:4 great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out – GLORY OF GOD! 1. FIRE of God which will reveal each man’s work for what sort it is (1 Cor 3:13) vii. From within the cloud, came 4 living creatures 1. COMING OUT of the Glory – to do a work 2. We always think of going INTO the GLORY, Here is a generation that is dwells in the GLORY, but comes out to do the work of the LORD viii. 4 - number of creation or that which is created ix. KEY: v 5 THEY HAD THE LIKENESS OF A MAN – This is the NEW CREATION MAN – coming out of the GLORY to do the work of the Lord! x. This is a generation that has reached full maturity and has finally been given the responsibility of covering the Glory – the new generation of that “anointed cherub that covers,” that used to be Lucifer xi. We all with open face beholding as in a mirror the GLORY, are changed (2 Cor 3:18) xii. The GLORY changes us! – we are learning new things today that were never known before 1. Daniel 12:4 Amplified “But you, O Daniel, shut up the words and seal the Book until the time of the end. Then, many shall run to and fro and search anxiously through the Book, and knowledge of God’s purposes as revealed by His prophets shall be increased and become great.” 2. God has saved certain understanding from “the BOOK” for the end times 3. This generation has learned to enter the GLORY in corporate worship like never before! 4. In the GLORY, we are changed 5. Coming out of the Glory is the new generation of cherubim – MEN and WOMEN of God! – who cover and protect and carry (transport God’s Glory) xiii. 4 faces – Your FACE reveals who you are - reveals your character 4 attributes that define this generation that carries the Glory 1. Man – the first face mentioned – tells who they are – a newly created generation of men who have been given the privilege of being the “vehicle” of God’s Glory upon the earth 2. Lion – speaks of Kingship (we are kings and priest); also speaks of courage and boldness; Also Judah was spoken of as a lion (Gen 49:9,10) in Jacob’s prophesies on his death bed – This also represents PRAISE (the Hebrew meaning for Judah) in these cherubim 3. Ox – speaks of servanthood and labor 4. Eagle – speaks of the prophetic – the ability to SEE prophetically; also speaks of SWIFTNESS of flight xiv. 4 wings – Help you to fly, and help you to cover – protecting the GLORY 1. God is creating the ability for us to FLY! – To be seated in Heavenly places! – Who shall ASCEND into the hill of the Lord? 2. Wings were also used to cover the their bodies (Ez 1:11) and to cover the GLORY (which was on the mercy seat) in Ex 25:20; Lucifer also was the anointed cherub that covered (Ez 28:14) xv. Straight legs (Ez 1:7) – enabling to walk the walk RIGHT (on the straight path – they have allowed God to Deal with all the issues in their lives, and now are mature (the crooked paths have been made straight) – 1. when the crooked places are made straight, the Lord’s Glory will be revealed Isa 40:4-5 Every valley shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth; 5 The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken." 2. Prov 8:8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them. xvi. Calves’ feet - that can bear burdens (work of ministry) and also can climb xvii. Hands of a man under their wings – confirming who they are – MEN – hands also speak of ability for ACTION – to PERFORM the work and service of the Lord xviii. Their wings touched one another (Ez 1:9) – this speaks of the PERFECTION of unity among this group of believers xix. did not turn when they went, but each one went straight forward – (Ez 1:9) – they were single-minded in their service of the Lord, not looking to the right or left – the perfect unity that they had achieved also enabled them to move about with great ease not inhibited by one trying to go in his own direction; steady and constant in their work; xx. v12 – They went WHEREVER THE SPIRIT wanted to go! – following the WIND of the Holy Spirit - John 3:8-9 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." xxi. V15 – Wheel with each living creature – wheels speak of movement – (confirmation of the Hebrew for cherubim – “vehicle”) – These creatures (the cherubim, or the New CREATION men – mature sons and daughters of God are responsible for transporting or carrying the GLORY of God in the earth xxii. V16 – color of the BERYL stone 1. 1st stone in 4th row on high priest’s breastplate 2. 8th stone in the foundation stones of NEW JERUSALEM 3. 4 – creation 4. 8 – New beginning 5. THE EARTH HAS NEVER SEEN THE LIKES OF THESE CREATURES xxiii. V16 – wheel within a wheel – the move of God is so intense and so perfectly times – how many times do we “just happen” to be in exactly the right place at the right time – one lunch appointment or one meeting (that seems to be coincidental) can totally alter the direction of our lives. xxiv. V17 TURNED not as they went – no division, no independence, no rebellion, PERFECT unity xxv. V18 – rims so high they were awesome – speaks of a move of God so high and powerful that it was almost terrifying xxvi. V18 rims were FULL of eyes (wheels were full of eyes – connected to the living creatures) This company of people has the ability to look within Always watching, always looking at what is happening xxvii. When these living creatures are lifted out of the earth, the move of God will also leave the earth, because the move of God and the GLORY is with them. xxviii. WHEREVER THEY ARE, is the MOVE of God’s GLORY! xxix. V20 where the spirit went, they went – Exactly xxx. V21 for the spirit of the creatures was in the Wheels (in the move of God) – their very existence! xxxi. V22 Light of firmament upon heads of the creatures – the GLORY of God is upon their heads (speaks of them being governed by the Glory) xxxii. V23 UNDER the firmament were there wings straight – UNDER speaks of submission STRAIGHT wings – ability to fly correctly and cover one another xxxiii. V24 when they went, I heard the noise of their wings (as the VOICE 0f God) As they move GOD was speaking in the earth Noise of the wings moving IS God’s VOICE xxxiv. V25 Whenever they stood, they let down their wings – don’t do anything without the command of God xxxv. V26 Above their heads was a THRONE and the likeness of a MAN (God) – these have the responsibility for taking God’s throne with them throughout the earth – the GLORY keepers – cherubim! xxxvi. V 28 appearance of the likeness of the GLORY of God e. Rev 5:8-11 “the four living creatures . . . sang a new song, saying: . . ."You are worthy . . . For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation . . . And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth." Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne.

xxvi. V18 rims were FULL of eyes (wheels were full of eyes – connected to the living creatures) This company of people has the ability to look within Always watching, always looking at what is happening
xxvii. When these living creatures are lifted out of the earth, the move of God will also leave the earth, because the move of God and the GLORY is with them.
xxviii. WHEREVER THEY ARE, is the MOVE of God’s GLORY!
xxix. V20 where the spirit went, they went – Exactly
xxx. V21 for the spirit of the creatures was in the Wheels (in the move of God) – their very existence!
xxxi. V22 Light of firmament upon heads of the creatures – the GLORY of God is upon their heads (speaks of them being governed by the Glory)
xxxii. V23 UNDER the firmament were there wings straight – UNDER speaks of submission STRAIGHT wings – ability to fly correctly and cover one another
xxxiii. V24 when they went, I heard the noise of their wings (as the VOICE 0f God) As they move GOD was speaking in the earth Noise of the wings moving IS God’s VOICE
xxxiv. V25 Whenever they stood, they let down their wings – don’t do anything without the command of God
xxxv. V26 Above their heads was a THRONE and the likeness of a MAN (God) – these have the responsibility for taking God’s throne with them throughout the earth – the GLORY keepers – cherubim!
xxxvi. V 28 appearance of the likeness of the GLORY of God

e. Rev 5:8-11 “the four living creatures . . . sang a new song, saying: . . ."You are worthy . . . For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation . . . And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth." Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne.
